Kamagong wood, East Indian rosewood,
bird's eye maple, golden Ceylon satinwood
Finish - Urethane high gloss finish
Brass hinges
Dark Burgundy Velvet
Kamagong wood (Camagon in Spanish)
is only found in the Philippines and is rarely exported. It'
s a fruit tree that produces an edible fruit called
mabalo.
The Japanese used to
make weapons with it because it is extremely hard and
dense.
Because of its rarity, many other
woods are often falsely labeled as Kamagon. This box
is made of the real thing.
Very dark brown with black
and purple overtones, I combined it with a high contrast
top of East Indian rosewood, bird's eye maple and a
touch of golden Ceylon satinwood at the center.
I didn't
round over the top edges as I usually do, thinking
the angular look in this case looked better.
Finished
with water-based acrylic, I didn't fill the grain with
finish as I usually do but left it prominent. Because
I could only obtain very small pieces of this wood,
the box is 1/8” thick veneer laminated over cherry.
Bottom is lined with dark burgundy
velvet.
These boxes can be
used as valet boxes, keepsake boxes, or all purpose boxes.
They will make unique gifts
for all occasions, fine home decor or office/desktop accessories.
