This is my artistic solution to the
problem of storing compact discs and DVDs. No
one wants an ugly plastic box sitting on desk,
credenza or shelf, plus it's hard to find a drawer
large enough to hold such a box.
These boxes not only serve as beautiful
decoration, but serve the dual purpose of providing
a convenient place for organized storage without
having to rummage through a cabinet or closet.
My primary emphasis for each design
is the beauty of rare and costly woods, complemented
by attractive design and use of metals such as
brass and aluminum accents.
These boxes generally hold from 24
to 28 CD's in standard jewel cases, and nearly
twice as many in the slim cases. Boxes are sized
so that the jewel case stores label-side-up for
easy identification. Additionally, the boxes will
hold nearly 100 CD's in paper sleeves.
All are made of solid wood and are
moderately heavy. For most of them, the lids are
designed to open only half-way and stop, so that
the lid doesn't flop over backwards. Don't try
to force the lids back or you'll break the hinges.
I generally make my own wood hinges since standard
leaf hinges are unsuitable for think-sided boxes.
All boxes have up to eight coats of
high gloss urethane varnish that makes them very
durable. Go ahead, spill your coffee on it - won't
hurt it a bit! All these boxes are one-of-a-kind,
no two are alike. It generally takes around ten
days to produce one box, mainly due to the time
required for multiple coats of vanish.
These boxes will last a life-time. |
